When a customer asks AI to suggest a service provider, your company is not competing only for a position in traditional search results. The customer might receive a ready-made answer that names a few alternatives and cites web sources. How could your business appear in such an answer?
There is no single technical trick. A sensible starting point is to make your business understandable: what you offer, who it is for, where you operate and where the facts can be verified. You can then measure how you actually appear in a defined set of AI searches.
First, distinguish a mention, a citation and a recommendation
At least three different things can occur in a ChatGPT answer:
Your company is mentioned by name. This establishes that its name appears, not that it was recommended.
Your website is cited as a source. Your page may have been used to support an answer even when your company was not offered as an option.
Your company is presented as a possible provider. This is closer to what customers mean by “Does AI recommend my business?”
These observations should be recorded separately. A link in a source list is not equivalent to an endorsement.
1. Explain precisely what service you provide
Start with your most important service. Within a few seconds of opening its page, a potential customer should be able to understand what the service includes, who it is for, where it is available and what the next step is.
General claims such as “high-quality services for everyone” are vague. A concrete statement helps visitors and information-processing systems alike: “Bookkeeping services for small limited companies in Helsinki and remotely across Finland.” Only state service areas and promises you can substantiate.
If you offer different services, create genuinely useful, distinct pages for them. Avoid dozens of near-identical city pages that only swap the location name.
2. Answer the questions real customers ask
Marketing copy and customers' actual questions do not always use the same vocabulary. Gather questions from sales, support and existing search data. Explain suitability, delivery areas, the factors influencing price and situations where the service is not appropriate.
Use clear subheadings. Don't hide essential information only in an image, behind a form or inside a client-side widget. Readable HTML helps browsers and information-retrieval tools access the content.
3. Keep public information consistent and current
Check your company name, service descriptions, office location, contact information and scope on both your own website and relevant public listings. Correct outdated information before creating more content. When another publisher gets something wrong, request a correction.
This does not mean collecting mentions at any cost. Fake reviews, artificial directory listings and unsupported “best in Finland” claims undermine trust.
4. Check technical discoverability
Important public service pages should return a normal HTTP response, contain useful readable HTML and not be unintentionally blocked by robots.txt or indexing controls.
OpenAI's guidance names OAI-SearchBot as the crawler relevant to ChatGPT's search features. This is separate from GPTBot, which concerns model training. Permitting access does not guarantee an AI mention or a citation. Our separate guide, Can ChatGPT find your website?, goes through the technical checks.
5. Test neutral customer questions
Asking ChatGPT about your company by name is a weak test of whether an unfamiliar customer might discover it. Try category-based questions such as:
“Where can I find a bookkeeper suitable for a small company in Helsinki?”
“Which companies offer e-commerce maintenance services in Finland?”
“What should I compare when choosing a [service] provider?”
These are illustrative prompts, not real AI Rank scan results. Tailor questions to your actual service and geography. Keep the market and language consistent when comparing results later.
6. Save the answers, not just a score
Record the question, time, model, answer and available sources. Read each answer. Was the company mentioned? Was its site cited? Which alternatives were presented?
A six-question sample is deliberately small. Two appearances out of six completed responses means 2/6 in this particular sample, not “33% of all ChatGPT visibility in Finland”. Prompt wording, model and date affect the outcome. See our guide to measuring AI visibility.
7. Fix the problem you actually observed
If a suitable customer question fails to surface your business, but your key service page lacks an accurate service-area explanation, start there. If results discuss service details absent from your page, improve the page. If cited sources contain errors, correct those.
Don't change everything at once. Pick one or two issues, record your edits and repeat a comparable check later. AI answers can change without a corresponding website edit, so avoid claiming causation from one before-and-after result.
A 30-minute starting audit
You don't need to fix everything in a day. Choose one core service and work through this short check. These are illustrative examples for a fictional Finnish business.
Time | Check | Record |
|---|---|---|
5 minutes | Does the page clearly name the service and actual area served? | Missing or unclear details |
10 minutes | Does it answer two or three practical customer questions? | Unanswered questions |
5 minutes | Is the page public, and is its main copy available in HTML? | Possible technical barriers |
10 minutes | What does a neutral, non-branded customer prompt produce? | Prompt, answer, sources, time |
If your company is absent, don't immediately conclude that something is technically broken. Check whether the query was genuinely relevant and whether it produced other businesses in your category. A short sample is a starting point for investigation, not a verdict.
Three common questions
Can you buy the top organic position in ChatGPT? An organic mention or citation is not a purchased search ranking. Any separate advertising products must be distinguished from organic responses. AI Rank does not sell or guarantee recommendations.
Will an llms.txt file alone solve this? No evidence establishes that a single file guarantees inclusion in ChatGPT answers. Start with useful public content and genuine technical accessibility.
How soon will changes have an effect? There is no fixed timeframe. Web-page changes, crawler access, source availability and model responses can update at different times. Evaluate several samples over time.
Check your starting point
AI Rank is designed to show a limited sample of Finnish-language AI answers, when a company is mentioned and which pages are cited. It should be interpreted as a sample, not an official ChatGPT ranking.
